Introduction

From our early stages in childhood we are taught not to brag, but rather to be humble. Humility is a virtue with biblical and spiritual roots. We abstain from bragging because we don’t want to come across as pompous or make others feel uncomfortable, but how far can humility take you? In today’s business world, where no job is secure and everyday the job market becomes more and more competitive bragging is a necessity according to Peggy Klaus, a business communications coach and author of Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It.

Summary/Content

Today, self-promotion is recognized as one of the most important attributes for getting ahead. Knowing how to showcase your talents and skills can be a tricky skill, though. Klaus promises to teach you how to brag and get away with it. In her book she talks about how people in different life stages can promote themselves. She teaches you how to communicate strengths and accomplishments without appearing to be too opportunistic, egotistical, or self-aggrandizing. In her attempt to teach the reader how to brag gracefully and impact in a way that is inviting to others, she provides you with some tips and tricks on how to get your “brag bytes*” or “bragalogues**” out there without rubbing people the wrong way.

Most of her teachings are based off of her “Take 12” Self-Evaluation, which I found to be the most useful part of the book. Klaus’ belief is that if you can construct graceful brag bytes and/or bragalogues for each of the “Take 12” questions, you will be set for any opportunity you get in which you can or should brag about yourself. She suggests that you take the time and put in the effort to truly think about each question and make your answers crystal clear in order to interest those who don’t already know you well.
