Influences in the Middle Ages

Even though the Roman Catholic Church influenced politics, society, and culture in the Middle Ages, it influenced politics and society more. All of these, politics, society, and culture, however, tied into together with one another.

In the church, the popes chose whether to excommunicate someone or not. In some cases, kings would get excommunicated. This unfortunately happens to be the situation in document two where Pope Gregory VII is threatening to excommunicate Henry IV. Popes could excommunicate the king and threaten to interdict the region the king looked after. Not only could popes excommunicate kings, lords, and nobles, he could dispose of the emperors as well. Pope Gregory VII made his powers very clear when he was excommunicating Henry IV in document two. Popes could also call for meetings. One meeting led to the starting of the Crusades. In document three, Pope Urban II wrote a letter of instruction to the Crusaders he had called upon.
