Concert Report

I attended the UWS Symphonic Band concert on Thursday, March 5th. . It’s been a long time since the concert. My sister is majoring in piano and my mom plays organ and piano so I used to listen and go to orchestra since I was young. Music is very familiar to me. I went to Dr. Pamela’s symphonic band rehearsal so it was more meaningful to go to her concert since I saw the process. When I observed rehearsal, she corrected the sound of each player carefully and had an interaction with them to make the piece beautiful harmony. I had high expectations for the concert and was excited to go.

First, they played Flute Concerto in D. Flute was a main instrument. For me, the Melting of the Winter’s Snow was my favorite one. When I saw the rehearsal, there was no singer but during the playing, the guest Jennifer sung as soprano. Before they started playing, Dr. Pamela explained briefly about this piece, it made audience understand easily and brought more attention. Since the spring is coming, the snow is melting outside so I could be immersed in emotion while I was listening. Some parts were really loud and they played very soft in some parts. I do not know why, but I could recognize dynamics more easily than during the rehearsal. The dynamics I recognized were forte, which is loud, pianissimo, which is soft, crescendo, which gradually gets louder, and decrescendo, which gradually gets softer. For me, the sounds of percussion instruments were striking in the Melting of the Winter’s Snow and I liked it.

Every piece they played in the concert was different. The most memorable part was they whistled. This was my first time seeing an orchestra use whistling as an instrument. I really enjoyed the concert so I also would like to go see another performance like jazz band.
