Social Media: A Blessing Or A Curse?

Nowadays, people can easily keep in touch with each other by social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Not even one day goes by without people checking for the latest updates from their friends. We rarely disconnect the internet, and talk less to each other in person . Checking your phone  has become an obsession. Social media, a great invention but for everything there is a price to pay. Too much social media can be  harmfull and can affect one’s psychology a lot.

First of all, social media such as Facebook can change our self esteem, especially girls’self esteem negatively. According to the article " Too Much Social Media Use Causes Low Self Esteem in Teen Girls: Study" researcher Amy Slater states “Time spent on social network sites was related to lower self-esteem, body-esteem, sense of identity and higher depression.” For example when your beautiful classmate’s picture pops up it’s hard not to feel even a little insecure and envious.

Secondly, social media can have a big impact on your school results. According to a study by Rosen, 50 percent of middle school, high school and college students check Facebook at least once during 15 minutes of study. It’s really bad for your concentration if you realize that it takes 20 minutes to go back to the same level of concentration. Therefore it will take a lot of time to finish your school work and chances are that achieving good quality is relatively small because of the lack of concentraion. Good school results will be minimal.

On the other side, social media has connected so many people over the world. You can chat with people you would never be able to meet without social media. However, this can have bad consequences because in the end you never know for sure if the handsome 17 year old guy you are talking to is really the person who he pretends to be and not a 50 year old pedophile instead.

In conclusion, social media can change our self esteem negatively and make particularly teenage girls more insecure. Social media can also have a negative impact on your school results because it reduces your concentration and good results will be minimal. On the contrary, through social media you can meet people all over the world you would’t be able to meet otherwise. However, this can have bad consequences because the handsome 17 year old guy you are talking to can in reality be a gray old pedophile. Too much social media like nowadays can damage one’s life. Social media is a wonderfull invention, use it carefully!
