Persuasive Speech Full Outline – Giving the gift of blood

INTRODUCTION/ ATTENTION STEP

  1. Attention Getter:

In May 2009, my mother was saved thanks to a massive blood donation in the wake of a big surgery. I always think about what would have happened in a case where the blood that she needed was not available. I can really relate to this topic, as I am now so thankful towards blood donations.

  1. Thesis:

As this topic is very close to my heart, I would like to change your mind and push you to donate your blood and help save lives. It is also a subject very actual in my country, in France. Indeed, one week ago, the French Health minister, Xavier Bertrand wanted to change the ethnicity of blood donations in France. According to “Le Point” (a French newspaper), they used to be anonymous and free, but now that the number of blood donation is very low, he wants to change the system and take blood from other countries, which is unethical.

  1. Establish Credibility:

I feel that I am able to talk about this topic to you and that I could possibly change your mind about donations as I did a great deal of researches and it is a topic that I find very interesting.

  1. Why should I listen to you?

Are you at least 17 years old? Do you weight more than 110 pounds? Do you consider yourself fairly healthy? If you answered: “yes” to all of these questions, and I am pretty sure you did, you should listen to me and consider donating blood. This topic concerns all of us as we basically are all made out of blood and we all need it to survive. Unfortunately, some people need blood transfusions to survive and they need donations.

Transition Statement: I am sure that you all know what is a blood donation but let me give you the exact definition: according to the American dictionary online, a blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions or made into medications by a process called fractionation.

NEED STEP

  1. What is the problem/What the audience is lacking?

You should all know that every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. According to the Red Cross website, more than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. Sometimes, some lives cannot be saved because of the lack of donations and this can be fixed easily... Thanks to my survey, I know that only 23% of you donated blood once in their life but the rest of you never did. The need of blood never takes a vacation and neither should donors.
