Essay – Crowded places and Unwritten Rules.

MARIA C. PEREZ DE ARCE

For some people, public places can be a nightmare, especially if they are crowded. Places like Metro stations, parks, and concerts among others need to have some unwritten rules that are taught through generations and have become part of our idiosyncrasy. Our society works because all these silent rules are imposed and the judges of them are the people that surround us.

Metro stations are full of small details that are ruled by our society’s unwritten laws. One example is mechanic stairs and the way we “should” stand in them. There are a lot of people who are in a hurry in Metro Stations and others are going really slow. It is unwritten but known that if you are in a mechanic stair and you are not hurry, you should stand over the right side in order to let other people pass by if they need to walk fast or even run. This rule also works in shopping malls, airports and other places that are crowded and have mechanic stairs.

Another example of how unwritten rules have an impact on our behavior in public and crowded places are the ones who rules in parks. Parks are the favorite place of families to spend time with their children. There are many legal laws that protect and prevent bad behavior in places like this, like no smoking and some pet policies. But there are also a lot of people that without breaking the law, can ruin a good family evening. Some unwritten rules help to minimize this bad behaviors. We all know for example that playing music at a very loud volume would not allow other people to have a nice conversation. We also all know that saying bad words in front of kids is not recommended for their education. In addition, we should reinforce to people’s education that throw trash in the ground it not safe for our environment and to the hygiene of our parks.

In another hand, we have another kind of examples for this issue. Concerts are supposed to make people have fun while listening to their favorite music. Most of these massive concerts are in huge flat places and that fact is what requires unwritten rules in order to work fine for every assistant. We know that in this world there is tall and short people and it is unwritten but known that people have to accept their heights and especially respect the height that the person that is in front of you. For example, short people cannot get into someone’s shoulders because they don’t allow people from behind to see anything.
