Part One - Applying EQi

The example that I chose is an article about the resent misfortune in Glasgow Scotland. On November 29, 2013 a police helicopter crashed into a local Glasgow pub. This helicopter had a crew of three, two police officers and a civilian pilot. On this evening the Glasgow pub was busier than usual due to the live performance of the popular band Esperanza. Which started off as a fun night quickly turned into a disaster. At 10:25pm the helicopter crashed into the bar. At first, this aircraft did not go through the roof leaving the civilians inside unharmed. Unaware of the danger lying above the band joked that they were “bringing down the roof.” Shorty after the helicopter came crashing through the roof. This crash left many injured and unconscious in a cloud of dust. People quickly reacted and formed a human chain to help get those injured and unconscious out of the bar and into safety. This quick thinking may have saved many lives. The outcome for all those involved is still unknown to the public because of how recent this misfortune is.

The EQi skill that is very present in this article is social responsibility. Social responsibility can be defined as as the potential to participate effectively in a team environment. This skill was demonstrated by everyone at the bar on the night of the helicopter crash. They formed together to help others putting the needs and safety of others before their own. It is amazing that this many people came together at once to help others in such a dangerous and scary situation. These people demonstrate enhanced functioning levels (high levels) of social responsibility. This is evidenced by their acts of trust, cooperation, and contribution to working together to help others.

It is extremely difficult to say what could of been done differently. It could have definitely made a difference if after the helicopter hit someone questioned what was happening rather than just laughing along with the band. If the people at the bar had used problem solving at the moment the helicopter hit the bar they would have figured out they were in danger, but there is no way to know if this would of helped. They did however use problem solving effectively once the were aware of the danger and they quickly found a way to get people to safety. We are still unaware of what caused the crash and this is the evident issue that could of been done differently. However, considering the entire situation I do not think that they people at the bar could of done anything truly different to improve their outcome.

Part Two - EQi Reflections
