Introduction to Human Resources Management (HRA701)

Assignment 2

Paired Assignment: Information Interview

Weighting: 20% of Final Mark

Due Date: Week of July 20, in class

Length: 7-9 pages, double spaced, font size 12

Objective

Research, conduct and report on an information interview to gain practical knowledge of jobs, career opportunities and companies. Contact and interview an individual who works in HR. Ideally, the individual performs a job that is of interest to you – the job may be entry level or more senior.

One of the best ways to find out about a particular position or career field is to interview the person in that job. Because you are asking for information, this type of interview is informal. It allows you to gather information on a potential career in a non-stressful situation where employers can be more candid. The information can help you decide whether it’s the type of work you want to do and whether it’s the type of organization you want to work in. This is an excellent way to develop contacts in your specific field of interest.

Requirements:

Contact and interview an individual who works in HR. Ideally, the individual performs a job that is of interest to you – the job may be entry level or more senior.

• Determine the scope and nature of the job, duties and responsibilities, the qualifications, career path, experience, education and skills required for the job (KSA’s).

• Determine the primary challenges of the job – what makes the job difficult or challenging, what makes it rewarding, what makes it frustrating?

• What are the current ‘hot’ issues in HR that the individual must deal with?

• What does the individual perceive as the future challenges of the job and the future of HR in that organization?

• What recommendations does the individual have for students of HR who will be looking for a career in HR?
