Informal Business Proposal

Social Media in the Workplace

This memo is to explain to you about using social media websites in your business.  As you know technology is playing a vital role in all areas of businesses today. Social networking has become a growing trend in the workplace, it plays multiple roles in the workplace.   As a trucking company you may not be aware of the different social media sites that are available and how they would be beneficial to your business.

You mentioned that you were interested in learning about social media websites.  I will explain what the various social media websites are and how they can benefit your company, plus I will point out the advantages and disadvantages of having social media websites in the workplace.  At the end of this proposal I will make my recommendation.

These are the social media sites that will be discussed:

  • Facebook
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Twitter

Facebook - This is a social networking site.  Through the use of ‘Likes’ and ‘Share’, friends and families can post pictures and messages. As of 2015, Facebook as over 1 billion users worldwide.

Google+ – Google+ is a social networking site that is designed to work with google search engines.  It allows small businesses to have a higher online presence.  It is like a virtual phonebook on the Internet.

LinkedIn – This is a social networking site for professionals.  It is similar to Facebook but it is for exchanging of knowledge and ideas among groups of professionals. It is also a great place for looking for resumes.

Pinterest – This is a site that can be used as a virtual online bulletin board.  You can ‘pin’ things to boards that can be viewed by everyone.

Twitter – This is a social networking site, similar to Facebook.  It allows you send and read short ‘tweets’ and post photos. It is good for blogging.

Disadvantages and advantages of social media

Advantages of Social Media website:

  1. It allows for flexibility. For example, instead of having a dispatcher on site, the dispatcher on call can be at home, monitoring, and answering calls from a laptop. It allows company executives to be able to keep up with things in the company while away on business or vacation.
  2. Makes a great recruiting tool.  A survey was conducted by Social Times, in it, they state that when it comes to hiring, social media websites is the way to go.  Companies used social media, 92% of the time for recruiting, mainly using sites, such as, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn (Bennett, 2013).  According to the American Trucking Association the estimate that there is over 3 million truck drivers in the United States as of 2010, that’s a lot of potential recruits.
  3. Dispensing Information.  Instead of having to send out letters and calling drivers, when new information is available, having a social networking site allows you to quickly dispense information to everyone at the same time.

Disadvantages of social media websites:

  1. Negative Comments.  Whether it’s true or not, it is a way for former drivers or employees to post negative comments about the company.
  2.  Decrease in productivity. A study done by the Nucleus Research Company, found out that when employees use site like Facebook, that productivity decrease by one and half percent (Zeiger, 2015).
  3. Confidentiality Compromised.  Employees may post information inadvertently that, which is not supposed to get out.

Facebook and Twitter are similar in the fact that they are both social networking sites, however Facebook is a lot more flexible and versatile, you can upload photos and videos, write messages, and it can be used in a number of applications.  Twitter, on the other hand, is not as easy to use as Facebook, it is more designed to be used as a place to send messages, as long as they are no more than 140 characters in length. Facebook allows anybody to comment on a post, whereas, Twitter only allows those you are registered to respond to posts.
