Real Life Negotiation Experience

1. What results did you get after negotiating your cell phone/internet bill?

• I had been with Rogers for about two years, and was paying $80/month, and I was not making much money at the time and couldn’t afford to keep that plan, so I called them and told them that Fido was offering me the same plan for $70/month. Since I was a fairly long-time customer of Rogers they said they will match the price, and so I was now paying $70/monthly with Rogers.

2. What worked well for you and what would you do differently next time?

• Well I got the outcome which I was looking for, which was a better deal than what I was already paying, and I managed to remain with the same company which saved me the hassle of having to change companies. What I could do differently would be instead of giving them a competitor price, I could just tell them that I am not able to stick around with the company as the plan was getting too expensive for me, and tell them that I was thinking of switching to Fido. Unless there are any other plans they might have for me. And if they say no, then I would ask them to switch me to their cancellation department. But I would not actually be intending to switch companies, I just want a cheaper plan from them.

3. Was it uncomfortable? Did having a script help you get over the initial discomfort?

• It was a little uncomfortable asking them for a lower price, as I had to think of what I was going to say as the conversation was taking place. But I have not yet had an experience of using a script whilst aiming to get a cheaper phone plan yet.

4. Most importantly, what did you learn about negotiations through this experience?

• I have not been able to implement this strategy
