Executive Summary

Performance management system is an essential process that is significant at all levels in Biogen Idec and NHS Shetland. It helps to improve the organisation's performance by connecting and aligning employees and organisational objectives.

Biogen Idec is a biotechnology organisation which focuses on researching and manufacturing the medical needs. They have been practicing PPA tool which comprise both MBO and ranking to evaluate the overall performance measurement.

NHS Shetland is a national health board providing health care services to publics. BSC approach has been adapted to review the performance of Boards.

The objectives of this study is to investigate Biogen Idec and NHS Shetland's current performance management practices that aligned towards the organisation's goals and determine each methods characterictics that influenced the effectiveness of the performance measures with a view of helping in translating the system that would assist to develop employee and add value to their growth respectively. It also evaluates the similarities and differences on the approaches adapted. Further, this study investigates the rationale for the similarities and differences; the weaknesses of the organisation's are dealing with currently and their potential future challenges of PMS that might impact their businesses.
