Introduction

Every employer is faced with bringing in and orienting new employees to the business “onboarding.” Onboarding entitles a number of tasks related to new hires, including completion employment forms, providing benefits and health and safety explanations, educating employees about company culture, processes and policies, and ensuring employees successfully transition into their new position. According to a book (Arthur, 2012) there’s a great deal of talk concerning the merits of first impressions. Usually the discussion has to do with how applicants can impress their prospective employers, and later how they come across as employees once they start work. No doubt this is important, but so too is the first impression employers make on their newest employees. Employers sometimes forget that an effective employer-employee relationship requires effort on both ends; that effort starts on day one. It can take very little time to form an opinion about someone, yet what happens in the span of a few hours, minutes, and even seconds can leave an indelible mark. The case study “Misdirection and Disorientation: A lasting First Impression” addresses the importance of the first impression companies provide on the first work day of new hires.
