Youth and Internet Addiction

Introduction

Internet, which was aimed to military and academic purpose now is wide spreading in our daily life. Internet as a device brings people plenty of convenience in their study and work which make the modern life more dependent on it. Thus a new conception-Internet addiction comes into human life. The Internet addiction can be definited as someone overly depends on the Internet and disorder their daily life. A series of problems leaded by the Internet addiction has seized the public attention and raised discussion. Involved in the chat room, addicting some indecent websites such as pornographic websites and violent websites, staying up late to play online games, all of these can result in bad consequences. For example, addiction to the computer games takes away from sleeping time and valuable studying time resulting in poor performance in their study; scanning the indecent websites can influent the adolescents physical and mind health and brings some potential crimes such as enhancing the rate of rape crime and murder crime. This essay aims at defining the problems caused by internet addiction and identifying some suitable solutions to tackle this problem. Firstly, it will give a brief introduction to the Internet addiction . Secondly it will illustrate the different issues caused by prolonged internet use for example, family problem, interpersonal relationship problem and academic problem.Finally, it will put forward a number of solutions to this problems and evaluate these solutions..

Definition

The conception of Internet Addiction was firstly introduced in a pioneer by Young(1996) which means overly depend on the Internet has raised a controversial discussion among some experts .Most of them thought addiction was related to substances absorbed such as relying on alcohol and drugs, while the user addiction on the Internet is not as same as a drug addiction( eg,Raehin 1990; Walker,1989).besides, others claim that Internet addiction is an exaggerative expression. They argue that people who spend plenty of time on the Internet are treated as Internet addiction, while those people who also spend most of their time on reading, working and neglect their families are not included into addiction. Despite all of these debetes, the damage on individual physiology and psychology out of overly depending on Internet has exsisted.

Then the most acceptable definition of Internet addiction is overly use Internet ,over controlled by Internet , absorbing satisfaction and happiness from Internet usage and can’t extricate themselves from the Internet even they have realized their abnormal behavior.
