Women Come In All Sizes

A very good morning to my English teacher, Pn Umah, and my fellow classmates. On this fine morning, I would like to share my opinion with all of you about how the media has changed the perspective of beauty in a young girls mind. The topic for today is “Women Come In All Sizes”.

The media negatively influences teenage girl’s body images by distributing airbrushed images of skeleton-like models and celebrities through several forms of media that manipulate teenage girls into believing they must be thin and beautiful in order to meet society’s standard of beauty. Everyday, teenage girls, including myself, are confronted with images of extremely thin and airbrushed models and celebrities on TV, movies, magazines, newspapers, and ads. With the ever increasing size and influence of the mass media in our daily lives, we are seeing more and more individuals suffer negative effects of being constantly exposed to images of "ideal" bodies in the media. This can cause a negative perception of one's body image, and contribute to developing eating disorders.

There have been numerous studies that have shown us how the media can lead to a negative perception of a person's body image. The movie and music industries, as well as advertisements constantly portray an ideal and beautiful body for women as one that is thin (in many cases, extremely unhealthily thin). When people see these images and then look at their own bodies, which are often times different from what is portrayed as ideal in the media, they begin to think that they aren't beautiful, are too fat, too pale, too whatever. This dissatisfaction with one's body image can lead to low self-esteem, and even depression.

Besides, many of the celebrities and models that women look up to as having the ideal body have admitted to be suffering from eating disorders. Having these people as body role-models encourages a dangerous behavior and increases the risk of developing
