Business Management (’15-’17)

Note:

The notes are recorded as per classes that I got a chance to learn in, in the course titled OB-1. The recordings are presented date wise. A few classes might be missing. Nevertheless, the dates are mentioned herewith. Some of the games played are noted at the end and also a special portion on Group Counselling session is also presented. It would give me great happiness if Fr. George Sebastian could give his valuable feedback on the learnings incurred by me in this course.

This class enabled me to learn the importance of the roles of a manager. Previously managing to me was just about Leadership and technical skills. But the three roles- namely Interpersonal, Informational and Decisional roles of a manager were of paramount importance after the class. Apart from managing employees, a manager should hone his own technical skills too. “How a manager fails”, opened the eyes of many students in the class. I felt that, I as a future manager, needed to manage the subordinates really well to succeed. Many a time, we aren’t able to communicate or network in the office environment. Whereas, for successful and effective managers, in this lies the key. I have seen many people in my office, who are wonderful in their job, but gain less respect from their subordinates. This is only due to their failure in becoming following all the 3 roles given by Mintzberg.

This class was mostly focused on our personality and our behavior. We were made to fill a questionnaire which was given back to us in the next class. The questions were based on our reactions to certain objects. Father explained about the role of our birth traits, our upbringing and our environment. Two people from the same family may be completely different.

The different personality types that we were identified with are as follows (as given by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)

  1.   Extraverted Individuals who are outgoing vs Introverted ones who are sociable
  2. Sensing vs Intuitive- The former are the practical persons who believe in an order.        Intuitive persons rely on unconscious processes
  3. Thinking vs Feeling- Based on the use of logic
  4. Judging vs perceiving- Based on the control we exert

My type came out to be ESFP. I was surprised by it initially. I didn’t know the rules of the game. I knew that I liked to talk to people and hence my personality is E. Most of the classmates had received an S in the second category. I felt that the question based in the paper were mostly structured so that people feel that they are ordered. I observed that most of the persons in our class scored an S in the exercise. So, I have no idea how effectively did the test come out. Nine out of 10 persons in my family got their score as S. Third factor, I received an F. I had a doubt in this question too. It showed that I was dependent on my feelings a lot. I feared initially that it reflected my incompetence to think. But when I saw the types of occupations these persons figure into, it relieved me a little. I completely agreed with many instances of my life where I was classified as a Perceiving individual who accustoms to such situations. Sir also gave the examples of leaders such as Obama and Gandhi with their personality types. It intrigued me, how the detailed study of 16 personality types were so well described by the test. The class was important to realize the importance of cultivating attitudes that shaped our beliefs.
