Agreement with Heterosexual Marriage

By Sophia Park

Marriage is one of the biggest events in our lives and many people are interested in who will be their marriage partner. Nowadays, there are many gay couples who want to get married in the world. Some countries allow gay marriage but some countries do not allow it so gay marriage supporters and another side argues about that. Victor Ortiz argues that marriage should remain an exclusive heterosexual legal institution because heterosexual marriage is natural way to have children.

First, “Opposition to gay marriage is found in the laws of nature- a man and a woman of different races can produce children; two men or two women cannot.”  Sometimes, Gay marriage supporters compare with the prohibition of interracial marriage. But, the roots are totally different. Interracial marriage was opposed because of bigotry. On the other hand, Gay marriage has been objected because of the laws of nature that only a man and a woman who has different races can make children. This is the natural way to have children. Not two men or women.

The author used objective reasoning in the following sentence : “Opposition to gay marriage is found in the laws of nature- a man and a woman of different races can produce children” and this statement includes Logos which is appeal to reason out of persuasive techniques. The author makes his opinion strong by using facts which were proved scientifically already.

Furthermore, “adoption by gay couples is not in the best interests of any child.” It is most impressive argument for gay marriage whether gay couples can get the permission to adopt children or not. In adoption, most important thing is what children need. Any child is not interested in being adopted by gay couples very much.

This statement “adoption by gay couples is not in the best interests of any child” is subjective reasoning and the persuasive technique of the author is Pathos which is appeal to emotion. The author makes feel sorry a little for the child. I do not agree with this reason because for some children, to have people who care for them itself may be their happiness.

The author also argued this “Gay households are less likely to provide a wholesome environment.” With the research of Dr. Timothy that “children raised in traditional families by a mother and father are happier, healthier, and more successful than children raised in nontraditional environments.” Gay households have higher probability to get problems physically, mentally. For example, substance abuse, confusion and danger of incest is higher than heterosexual households.
