Muslims celebrate two Eid festivals in a year. One comes right after Ramadan. We call it Eid- ul- Fitr. This one is called Eid- ul- Adha.

What is Eid- ul- Adha? It is a celebration of Hajj, the sacrifice of Ibrahim A.S. and the miracle of zamzam.

You may have seen pictures or videos of mass numbers of Muslims, all dressed in white flocking to the two holy cities, Makkah and Madinah. This is the Muslim pilgrimage, The Hajj. It is a huge event and every Muslim who has the means to, must perform it at least once in their lifetime.

The hajj is followed by the sacrifice of an animal. Now this a very interesting story. The story of Prophet Ibrahim A.S. sacrificing his son for God. In Islam our God is Allah. Allah loved his sacrifice so much that at that very moment, Allah replaced his son with a lamb. Prophet Ibrahim A.S. sacrificed a lamb for Allah. Allah has made it mandatory upon every Muslim to come till the end of time to remember and practice the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim A.S.

Muslims all over the world sacrifice animals on Eid- ul- Adha and feed the poor and needy, all to please God Almighty Allah. But that is not the only interesting story behind Eid- ul- Adha. It is the story of another miracle. Right, Mariya?

Yes, the story of zamzam. Prophet Ibrahim A.S.’s wife Hajrah and son Ismail A.S. were alone in the desert and baby Ismail was very thirsty. His mom put him on the ground to go and look for water. On the ground Ismail started rubbing his heels against the sand while crying. From beneath his heals, a spring of water gushed forth. When his mom returned, she saw her son with water all around him. She gave water to her son, drank some herself but the water kept flowing fast. She said zamzam and since then, this running water has been named zamzam water. And also because of zamzam that barren desert became a city full of people now known as Makkah.
