Intervention Case Study

Abuse comes in many forms, and in this case study verbal abuse is the type that is displayed. The case study provides multiple examples not only of verbal abuse, but also the effects it has on the victim. However, overcoming abuse is possible, and those who witness it, and dish it out should all be aware of this. Addressing the underlying causes of the abuse is the beginning of resolving the crisis. Next is implementing the intervention, which typically includes counseling of some form, and in some cases, multiple forms. It is equally important for the professional helper to bear in mind that “you can lead the horse to water, but you can’t make it drink,” which means you have to work with the individuals to keep them motivated to make the changes necessary to overcome the crisis they have found themselves in.

Meet The Couple

Cherie and Tyrone are a married couple, who have been married for thirteen years. Tyrone is the critical type, and has been that way since the beginning of the relationship. Cherie was always the victim of Tyrone’s verbal out cries. When she’d make a mistake, Tyrone would often call her “stupid” or “retarded.” Cherie would also have her appearance attacked. Tyrone always demolished Cherie for any attempts to bring herself up. The list of verbally abusive characteristics goes on further, and eventually spilled over into the couple’s public life. Cherie’s depression was noticed by her physician, who she sought treatment from in order to overcome her sleeping problems. Over time, Tyrone eventually began to isolate Cherie from her family with his temper tantrums and criticisms. This couple is obviously going through their very own crisis, which needs to be addressed before it perpetuates or goes any further and possibly becoming physically violent. The intervention strategies used in this case need to move slow and demonstrate the ability to work with the couple patiently. Changes are always possible with the right direction and motivation.

Crisis components

Tyrone is threatening, controlling, critical, and intimidating toward Cherie (Cavaiola & Colford, 2011). This could potentially lead to more physical abuse, which is obviously the worst case scenario. Due to the constant belittling Tyrone is doing to Cherie, the mental health of both individuals can suffer tremendously. As stated, Cherie displayed signs of depression that were becoming visibly noticeable. The isolation of Cherie could only make the situation worse, due to caring family members prying into the business of an overly jealous spouse. This could potentially cause Tyrone to see any person having anything to do with Cherie, as a threat. This in turn could cause the controlling nature of Tyrone to escalate.  The crisis components of this case are strong signals coming from both Tyrone and Cherie. Cherie felt like she was a prisoner within her own home. Tyrone’s anger is stemming from somewhere. Both parties have underlying issues that need to be addressed, or else they will continue to give fuel to this crisis.
