Ethical Treatment of Animals

Animals have played an important role in many aspects of this world; some look upon these roles with favoritism, some with disgust. Animals give live birth and are considered different from humans by some people because of their behavior. Some animals are consumed as food by humans and other animals or trapped for their furs. Many times people get animals as pets and neglect them. Some animals are pulled out of their habitat and are used as research; yet some humans think they do not deserve any rights because they are animals. Throughout this paper I will portray examples of possibilities that can be used to change the life of an animal in the food industry, as a pet in homes and as research in laboratories; we need to help them have a better life even if we are going to use them as food, a companion and even as a science experiment, they have the right to enjoy life even if it’s for a moment.

Factory farms today, thousands of animals are crammed into filthy, windowless sheds and confined to wire cages, gestation crates, barren dirt lots, and other cruel confinement systems. The factory farming industry strives to maximize output while minimizing costs of course at the animals' expense. The giant corporations that run most factory farms have found that they can make more money by cramming animals into tiny spaces, even though many of the animals get sick and some die. Recently in 2011, Sparboe Farms, located in states of Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado, had an MFA undercover investigator expose appalling cruelty at the fast-food giant's major egg supplier. Ask yourself, “What is really in a McDonald's Egg McMuffin?” Hidden-camera footage shot at Sparboe Farms, the fifth-largest egg producer in the country and a significant egg supplier to major companies like McDonald's, Target, Sam's Club, and other smaller companies, revealing hens crammed into filthy battery cages, and dead hens left to rot alongside birds still laying eggs for human consumption. The investigator also documented workers burning off the beaks of chicks without painkillers, sadistically and maliciously torturing animals and throwing live birds into plastic bags and leaving them to suffocate.

An investigation received unparalleled international media attention airing on ABC's Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and 20/20 and prompted McDonald's, Target, Sam's Club, and Supervalu to immediately discontinue their relationships with Sparboe Farms. Following the investigation, MFA filed a legal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Sparboe for making false and misleading public claims regarding animal welfare practices.
