Why does Harold love Maude?

If a man loves a woman, nothing can hold him back. As a matter of fact, most people, if not all, think that age difference does play a significant role in a relationship. In spite of this ordinary norm, Harold and Maude are still the exceptional case of falling in love with each other in which Maude is an old woman who may be Harold’s grandmother. However, Harold falls head over heels with Maude because of her free spirit and understanding towards him regardless of how old she is.

Firstly, Maude is so attractive to Harold because of her free spirit which makes her stands out from other girls. In the film, Harold’s mother is always the most enthusiastic one who cares about the relationship between her son and other girls. Thus, his mother likes putting Harold into speed dating with girls who are gentler and quieter when they compare to Maude. They are well-mannered that dress formally, behave politely and talk gently. Regrettably, such elegant girls are totally not Harold’s cup of tea. So that’s why Harold commits to postiche suicide to send them out. While Maude is a free spirit weird woman who never complies with social norms or even law. In the film, she is stopped by the traffic police, and the police requests for her driver license. Maude says she doesn’t trust it. Finally, with her courage, she dares to take the police motorcycle and go away with it. It apparently reflects she is a brave, independent woman whose personality is different from other girls. Besides, in the funeral, she breaks the conservative dress code that people usually dress in absolute black for expressing their mourn to the dead whereas Maude attends it with a colorful dressing and a yellow umbrella. It reflects that she shows no respect for the bereaved. Actually, she is a beacon to Harold who illuminates his tedious life. All Harold wants is stimulation and Maude compensates what he wants definitely. Her spirit is so special that other girls don’t possess.
