  • Question: One of the major challenges is correctly breaking down the business goals to objectives. Please define a business objective for the Pateco project, and assess that the objective you defined is SMART:

An objective that follows SMART is more likely to succeed because it is clear (specific) so you know exactly what needs to be achieved. You can tell when it has been achieved (measurable) because you have a way to measure completion. A SMART objective is likely to happen because it is an event that is achievable.

Goal- Goals are long-term aims that you want to accomplish and they are goals are less structured.

Patco Company’s goal- To be No. 1 manufacturer in the world

Objectives- Objectives are concrete attainments that can be achieved by following a certain number of steps. And objectives are more specific and structured.

To improve customer delivery by 10% by the end of next year. Let’s do SMART analysis.

S Smart:

With reference to the SMART analysis on Wikipedia, a specific goal will usually answer the five 'W' questions:

What- Specific goal- customer satisfaction through delivering servers to the customers on time

Why- Reasons, purpose, benefits- Last year, Pateco lost $1 million due to late delivery

Who- Who is involved- Headquarters, stakeholders

Where- Location- San Jose

Which- Requirement- managing the documents for product change management process Constrain- current process is manual and no proper tracking system

M Measurable:

Indicators should be quantifiable/ measurable- by comparing this delivery percentage with last year

An Attainable:

How can the goal be accomplished? - Create new system called change management system which includes creation, change and tracking. A workflow process, which provides the ability to rout the documents.

How realistic is the goal based on other constraints? - Constrain- The system must be implemented in next 6 months

R Relevant:

Can the whole process be implemented at one time?

Will the user adoption be easy?

If the process is implemented in phases, what is included in each process?

Will the bugs be fixed on time?

T Time-bound: Project period is within 6 months.
