Cognitive development consists of adolescent contemplation, reasoning skills and the all encompassing decision making skills. Theoretically adolescent egocentrism, feelings of uniqueness and invincibility can lead to self absorption and thinking from the intuitive phase instead of rational thinking (Berger, 2005). This is the maturity of the aptitude to imagine and rationalization. Until recently, much of the work on adolescent cognitive maturity was dedicated to a search for a core instrument that could account economically for broad changes in pubescent thinking (Keating, 2004). Adolescents have trouble processing school work and personal dilemmas. The complexity of this arena of the life span can be traumatic.

The capability to reflect on potential may persuade assessment production, in either optimistic or pessimistic ways. Adult philosophy differs from adolescent thoughts in three major ways: Practicality, flexibility and dialectical (Berger, 2005). These three areas combine emotional phases with logical phases. These characteristics are known as the post-formal stage of cognitive development, combining a new "ordering of formal operations" with a "necessary subjectivity" (Sinnott, 1998, p. 24).
