HD-DVD vs. BluRay technology

Introduction

As for the next generation of disc storage, there are two blue-laser based disc formats that are competing for the same market. The two formats are called Blu-ray disc and HD DVD that competed to become the high-definition DVD format to replace standard DVD. The format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to be the dominant media standard for content in high definition has effectively ended with the win of Blu ray early in 2008 [http://www.mediacollege.com/video/format/compare/bluray-hddvd.html]. HD DVD and Blu-ray are two main forms of optical discs used for storing movies and other videos. Although the discs look similar in size and shape, there are significant differences. The difference between an HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player is the laser technology that's used to record and play back the data. A Blu-ray player can play most DVD but a DVD player cannot play Blu-ray discs. Each of them bring along their own advantages and disadvantages, HD DVD players is much cheaper than Blu-ray machines, but Blu-ray discs have more storage space and more advanced protections against piracy. However, both versions deliver sharp resolution.

History

Introducing the two formats

The format battle between HD DVD and Blu-ray is a big concert, especially in the electronics industry, computer industry and the movie industry. A large number of these companies have decided to support one of either format exclusively. For many companies, the support has switched since the format was introduced for example Paramount’s company at first supported one format, but later on turned to support the other also. Besides, there are some companies decided to support both formats and they will change to the other format if it is a stronger one [http://www.nada.kth.se/utbildning/grukth/exjobb/rapportlistor/2006/rapporter06/wiss_andreas_06162.pdf].

It is noteworthy that HD DVD executives have stated that because more high definition movies will be distributed over the Internet in coming years, they have essentially upgraded existing DVD technology to get the product available fast and to keep prices down. Blu-ray discs include architecture that Sony’s chairman Sir Howard Stringer calls “revolutionary, not evolutionary”. On the other hand, Toshiba promotes economy and a swift entry into the market before developing advanced and revolutionary technology with its HD DVD, while Sony has the opposite intentions with Blu-ray [http://www.nada.kth.se/utbildning/grukth/exjobb/rapportlistor/2006/rapporter06/wiss_andreas_06162.pdf].
