CROSS-CULTURAL MANAGEMENT (BUS3464/OBM60304)

FINAL EXAM BRIEF  (AUGUST 2016)

Format

  • There are 2 sections:
  • Section A – Case Study
  • Section B – Scenario based questions

  • Section A
  • Case Study (not pre-seen)
  • Answer ALL questions (2 questions)
  • 50 marks

  • Section B
  • 3questions/scenarios – answer any TWO
  • 25 marks each question/scenario; total = 50 marks
  • Duration:  3 hours with 5 minutes reading time
  • Weightage of the final exam = 50%

Section A  America, Singapore, india

Scope:

  • Cultural dimensions
  • Communication styles

Lecture scope: try to real all lecture slides

  • Lecture 2 – Dimensions of culture in business (Hofstede’s model), whcich issue under which part, relate to case study, no need to explain all countries,
  • Lecture 11 – Business communication across cultures (Hall & Hall, 1990) explain this model to communicate with case study country’s example.

Important pointer:

  • Need relevant illustrations & examples to support your explanations (from the case study or your own research/reading for some questions i.e. those questions that ask for your opinion)  (British, Dutch..if communication, illustration and elaborate with own examples beyond the case study)
  • Take note of the theories/models( Lec 4- country’s cluster, need to extra knowledge)
  • Apply what is relevant to the case
  • Take note of the countries indicated in the case

Example (1) – where countries play a role in your answer:

A few of an American company’s managers are working in Turkey.  They find that their workers are not meeting their production targets. This has raised concern about their workers’ efficiency.

How different are the motivation needs between an American and Turkish worker?  How should the American managers motivate their workers? Use the Needs theory to explain your recommendations.                                                                        (25 marks)

Indication to answer: Need to know Hofstede to differentiate America( low power distance, eficincy) and Turkey (not productive, not efficient) and to infer how the motivation needs are different and suggest ways to motivate the different groups of workers specifically. How two countries work differently?

Example (2) – countries do not play a role in your answer.  Scenarios can provide examples for explanations:
