SMARTPHONES BEING USED BY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL AS A TOOL FOR LEARNING

1.0 Introduction

This research work examines phone usage and identified the effects of mobile phones on the academic performance of students at the University of Batangas. The research work was performed so as to understand and also find the correlation between academic performance of students and the usage of mobile phone during class hours which is general believed to be an avenue of distractions to students. The information from this work was carried out using structured questionnaires administered to 45 students to get their individual views. Our findings indicated that students are influenced negatively to a great extent by the mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music and others while their academic activities are neglected and left to suffer. Also, this study discovered that the use of mobile phone is uncontrollable among students which are the leading cause of poor academic performance among students.

Twenty-five years ago, the term “technology” had a rather different meaning than it does today. Anything other than chalk-and-talk or paper-and-pencil was considered technology. In an ever changing technological world, computers seem to be at the forefront of Education. At the same time, the exact impact of using technology for instruction is still unknown. Some questions teaching communities grapple with are technology's role in student's desire to learn and how technology affects the retention of the information. More specifically, it would be useful to know whether students respond in a more positive manner to participating in a class when using mobile phones versus when using paper-based methods.

Today people are on their phones, email on their phones, shop on their phones, and look for the best gas prices on their phones. Anything someone can do on his or her computer, he or she can do on his or her phone. In most professions, it would be difficult to succeed without a mobile device. It allows for more efficient work. To facilitate learning, one might ask why not access and use all that mobile technology has to offer.  There is the conflicting priority of young people, parents and teachers in relation to the mobile phone device, with teachers more concerned about issues such as discipline in the classroom and parents worried about means of contacting their children at every point in time.
