Equality 7-2521 begins Anthem with this declaration of his sins. The society he lives in influencing the development of his thoughts. His moral assessment of his actions change from beginning to end. The opening statement: “It is a sin to write this,” showing how his initial moral assessment is what he as been taught and told to think. Equality’s eventual assessment of his sin by the end of the book is correct. He has the write to be his own person and to think for himself.

Taught that he is evil because he is not like his brothers, and is told that he is too tall, for the rest of his brothers are not. They say that he has “evil in his bones,” because he is 6 foot tall and very few of his brothers are. Equality 7-2521 refers to himself as, “we” instead of “I,” as people say when talking about themselves. It’s confusing at first, assuming it was a group, as “we” was mentioned. It really turned out that Equality 7-2521 was one person and by “we,” he meant “I.” he meets a girl who he begins to talk and have feelings for, which is a great sin. She goes by the name of Liberty-5300. If someone finds out he will be punished. She is different like him. Throughout the book it is apparent that the people are know as one and not individuals.

They cannot think alone, do things on their own, or have their own ideas about the society. Equality is at the age where he is assigned a job. He thinks and wishes about what he wants, but really it is a sin for him to think this way. He is supposed to trust that they will give him what is best, but he can’t help it. Others see that he is different and don't like it. He is punished for his uniqueness and the way he thinks. His punishment is his job, he got assigned the worst job he can get, a Street Sweeper. Once they announce his job to him, he is instantly upset and disappointed. Equality has been in trouble other times before so this was basically his punishment for life. The fact that Equality 7-2521 is different and not like his brothers hurts
