Chilean Education- Sustainable Development

For a developing country, Chile’s education system is very refined. Children are required by law to attend both primary and secondary school, both of which are funded by the government. College is optional, as it is in the United States, and admission is largely based on the SAT test similar to the one administered in the U.S. Upon admission to college, students are able to take a variety of classes, with many environmental studies majors available as an option. While most children are offered a variety of courses in primary and secondary school, some kids in poorer areas are forced into technical-professional schools, where they learn a specific trade. The trade they learn is often a majority of their curriculum, with little outside education available. Therefore, children in these types of schools are often unaware of how to properly use energy and utilize more efficient forms of power. While they might be in school for metal assembly or electricity, they do not have a specific program that forces them to be aware of how electrical power influences the environment, or how metal assembly factories could be more energy efficient, therefore reducing CO2 levels.

A program should be proposed to the Chilean government concerning education young people about the harmful effects of power generation. This program could include an extra period of learning for both technical-professional schools and more liberal arts types of schools that mandates learning about the environment, and how to efficiently conserve power in order to make the earth a safer place for future generations. Since the government already funds over 90% of schools, with only private schools in exclusion to that estimation, it should have no problem funding for one extra subject in each school that would benefit society immensely.
