ADHD or Child’s Play?

It seems as if days are passing when listening to him tell a story because he has to include every detail, big or small. His love for video games allows him to reach the highest level faster than any of his friends, but he cannot seem to find passion in his school work. His curiosity causes him to dismantle the objects in his bedroom in order to understand the mechanics behind them. My brother, Conner, has gone through life having teachers, and even my parents, question his ability to learn like a “normal” child. Negative labels such as daydreamer, difficult, hyperactive, and currently, ADHD, have been attached to him for his entire life. What are these labels doing to my brother? Are they creating a child with a learning disorder who will always feel like they are not good enough? I believe these tags are inhibiting him from becoming who he truly is.

It seems like more children are being diagnosed with Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD, than ever before. The Mayo Clinic describes ADHD as a chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. At the sight of a jitter, many parents are rushing their children to the doctor to get tested with the thought of abnormality in mind. Doctors claim that the rising diagnosis proves that the disorder is being better recognized and accepted. However, in reality, many children are taking ADHD medication with the intent of doing better in school and improving behavioral skills. Today’s society has become so obsessed with conformity that at the first sign of a child being different, parents run to some “magic pill” for instant satisfaction when, in fact, this could be the child’s first attempt at being themselves or the beginnings of showing some independence.
