HW Assignment 1 ASTM & AATCC

This assignment should be done individually. Submit this assignment on Carmen in the correct dropbox by 9:30am on the due date cited in syllabus.

  1. ASTM download. Download copies of ASTM standards for use in lecture and homework assignments.

  1. Go to the library home page http://library.osu.edu/
  2. Click on “Off Campus Sign-In” on the right side of the page and sign in with your osu user name.
  3. In the second row of tabs from the top, click on “Books and More” and in the search box type “ASTM” and click Go.
  4. The first record that pops up should be “ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library”, click on that.
  5. This will take you into a logged on section of the ASTM website. You can then click “MyStandards”.
  6. You will need to click Yes, I agree with the License to have access to ASTM’s standards.
  7. In the Search area, you can type the documents you wish to access (Ex: ASTM D1776-08)
  8. Once it pops up you will hit the Download PDF button to download the file.
  9. A PDF version of the whole standard will open and you can use the icons at the bottom to save or print as needed.

**It is recommended you access this site from an on campus location to lessen the issues with off campus sign on.

For class you need to download and save the following but do not print it:

ASTM D6193-11 Standard Practice for Stitches and Seams  (***Do not print – 143 pages!!)

For class you need to download and print the following:

ASTM D1776 – 08 Standard Practice for Conditioning and Testing Textiles  Book of Standards Volume: 07.01

ASTM D7017 – 12 Standard Performance Specification for Rainwear and All-Purpose, Water-Repellent Coat Fabrics Book of Standards Volume: 07.02

ASTM D 4970M - 10 Standard Test Method for Pilling Resistance and Other Related Surface Changes of Textile Fabrics: Martindale tester

ASTM D4154 – 01 (reapproved 2008) Standard Performance Specification for Men's and Boys' Knitted and Woven Beachwear and Sports Shirt Fabrics

ASTM D4155 – 01 Standard Performance Specification for Women’s and Girl's Woven Sportswear, shorts, slacks and suiting Fabrics

ASTM D3776 / D3776M – 09a Standard Test Methods for Mass Per Unit Area (Weight) of Fabric

  1. ASTM and AATCC homework exercise. You must know how to find things on ASTM and AATCC for future class projects. This exercise will help you learn how to do this. You also can look around the sites to understand the range of products that are covered, and the types of services.

Go to the ASTM website astm.org, under the Products & Services dropdown menu, select Standards & Publications. Then use the Browse area to select Topics and click on Textiles. This section is divided into subtopic areas including standards symposium papers, and journals.  You can also go back and use the Search area to type in specific standards.

  1. Report the number for the standard performance specification of men’s and boys knitted dress shirts
  • D4119-14 - Standard Performance Specification for Men’s and Boys’ Knitted Dress Shirt Fabrics
  1. Report the number for the standard test method for measuring the air permeability of fabrics
  • D737-04(2012) - Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

  1. Report the number for Standard Test Method for Twist in Single Spun Yarns by the Untwist-Retwist Method
  • D1422/D1422M-13 - Standard Test Method for Twist in Single Spun Yarns by the Untwist-Retwist Method

It is also important to see the breadth of the entire site. Go back to the first page and enter info to find the following:

  1. Report the number for Standard Specification for Helmets Used in Recreational Bicycling or Roller Skating

  • ASTM F1447-12 Standard Specification for Helmets Used in Recreational Bicycling or Roller Skating

  1. What committee deals with textiles?

  • Committee D13

  1. What committee deals with forensic sciences?

  • Committee E30

  1. What committee deals with fire standards?

  • Committee E05

Go the AATCC website - you must use the www in the title (www.aatcc.org).  OSU does not have an agreement with AATCC like the one they have with ASTM, so you cannot download test methods for free. We will use modified methods which are translated in this handbook, and you can also study the book itself and CD which will be stored in room 219. Select Test Methods in the left hand column and use either the Alphabetical List or Topical List to answer the questions below.

  1. Report the test method number for Mildew and Rot Resistance in Textiles.  What end use would require this test method?

  • AATCC Test Method 30-2013; the two purposes of this test method are to determine the susceptibility of the textile materials to mildew and rot and to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides on textile materials.
  • What end use would require this test method? This test method would be used in textile materials that are exposed to moisture and humid environments.
  1. What is photochromism’? What test method is used to evaluate photochromism in textiles? (Yes, you cannot download the whole test method without buying it, but you can get the first sentence that defines photochromism)

  • AATCC Test Method 139-2005

  • Photochromism is defined as reversible change of color upon exposure to light.

  • This test method is intended for detecting and assessing colored textiles which change in color after brief exposure to light but which return to their original shade when stored in the dark.

  • “A specimen is exposed to light of high intensity for a time much shorter than that necessary to cause permanent change.  The change in color of the specimen is assessed immediately after exposure with the Gray Scale for Color Change.  The specimen is then stored in the dark under specified conditions and assessed again.”
  1. Report the test method number for Antibacterial Activity of Textiles: Agar Plate Method.  What end use would require this test method?

  • AATCC Test Method 90-2011

  • “The objective is to qualitatively detect bacteriostatic activity on products that are treated with antimicrobials and are capable of producting a zone of inhibitation. Some test samples do not have a flat surface, therefore, this method provides the advantage of testing odd shaped and non-flat surfaces by partially embedding them into molden agar prior to solidification. This provides the intimate contact required between the test sample and the seeded agar.”
  • What end use would require this method? You would use this method in sportswear and undergarments, textile materials that will have a higher likelihood of growing bacteria. This method would help decrease odor and growth of other bacteria.

  1. Review some of the other titles of test methods in the AATCC manual, notice that many are focused on color and chemical response properties of textiles, while the ASTM addresses physical properties like strength and abrasion resistance. Report one standard or test method from each site that has not been mentioned so far.

  • Soil Release: Oily Stain Release Method (AATC Test Method 130)

  • Standard Test Method for Maturity of Cotton Fibers (Sodium Hydroxide Swelling and Polarized Light Procedures) (ASTM D1442-06(2012))
