When the decision is made by couples to have children, obstacles that may occur which would ultimately cause one of the individuals to become a single parent are hardly ever taken into consideration. Single parenting can be resulted by a destroyed marriage, the loss of a partner, or individuals electing to be parents without getting into the bond of marriage. Though it can be a complicated task, being a single parent can also be quite rewarding to the parent and the child alike. Single parent families are often interdependent, thus making the teaching of responsibility to children an extremely essential task; while children in dual-parent families often have the benefit of activities being dependent upon the parents. Children who are raised in many single parent families realize that they are the primary concern in their parents' lives. They are taught to be expressive; all while balancing their needs and being considerate to the needs of those around them. The effects of being raised in a single parent home can be attributed to sacrifice and effective communication.

The world we live in today is motivated by immediate satisfaction. Being a single parent involves understanding the truthfulness associated with the concept of delayed satisfaction. It also forces you to take heed to the many responsibilities that caring for someone other than yourself alone entails. Being motivated by immediate satisfaction tends to cause people to be selfish and lose sight of the many things that can hinder them from any level of gratification. All in all, one must sacrifice today to appreciate tomorrow; and that is the most important reality associated with being a parent. In order to communicate respectable principles as a single parent, you must acknowledge the difficulties associated with raising children alone. Lack of personal time, a constrained social life, and financial stress are just a few stumbling blocks that must be dealt with. It is imperative to encourage open communication to ensure that children feel loved and receive the attention needed. This act serves as the basis of developing sincere and trusting relationships. Encouraging open communication also aids you in attempting to cancel the feelings of abandonment and the concepts of loneliness that some children may demonstrate.
