Abstract
After the investigation in nearly few decades, psychologist used different methodology to examine the association between single parenting and children’s cognitive development, such as The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Bayley Scale of Mental Development or other IQ and achievement test. The results are consistent that single parenting will affect children’s cognitive performance to become lower. The reason of which is that divorce cause several problems to single mother or father, such as low economic hardship, anxiety, lacking of maternal mastery or depression, that will affect the quality of parenting. Furthermore, psychologist tried to investigate different roles that affected single parent family such as single mother’s grandparent and nonresident father. The result of the investigation is that they can also increase the ability of children cognition. Moreover, previous study also discover that race and gender will affect children cognitive development in single parent family. Generally, boys are more affected by single parenting than girls, and while children usually have fewer effect in single parent family than black children. In following study, we will mainly focus on other factor that affect children cognitive development in single parenting, examine the association of children cognitive and other roles that was involved in single parenting such as father-like figures. We will also deeply focus on the effects of different types cognitive development.
