Take place in two places, the village and the city.
The condition of women is at the heart of this short story. Is about the relationship of a mother, victim of abuse by her husband, and her daughter.
The mother is the prisoner of her own culture. All this is seen through the eyes of the daughter. We really fats understand that the mother is bitten by her husband.
What the narrator see, with the eyes of a child, doesn’t have the same meaning for us. They run away to the village, to grandfather-uncle. For her its like heaven. The mother is unhappy, feels guilty because she has left her husband. She is ostracized by the other village women. The loneliness. The girl is a parent child relationship with grandfather-uncle. There is no trust between the girl and her mom. You feel like the child is the one who is taking care of her mother., it’s a really cold relationship.
The darkness of the is softened by the relationship between the girl and grandfather uncle. The mother is seen as an social outcast. The husband write a letter to her, apologizing for what he did and she decide to go back. She feel culturally guilty for leaving him. She accept her fate, he is still her husband after all. She accept the fact that every form of rebellion is not correct, this is how it works, she has broken the rules. She is the one who wrote the firt letter. The impotence of the child narrator. She pretends she doesn’t hear what is happening, she is powerless in front of the situation. She is completely innocent, naïve but also observant, which tells us what she doesn’t understand. She doesn’t use the word bruise, but we understand it’s one. Technic used a lot by writer when the child doesn’t understand but we do. She also has a child honesty (p5 will you miss your father?). She also has an instinctive knowledge of the truth. (p14 see through her mother lies).
