On the moonlit of Wednesday between eleven and midnight dated June 19, 1861, Jose Rizal was born in the lakeshore town of Calamba, Laguna. Lieutenant General Jose Lemery was the governor-general at the time of his birth. He is the seventh of the eleven children of Francisco Mercado Rizal and Theodora Alonso y Realonda. On June 22, 1861 with an age of three days old, Rizal was baptized in the Catholic Church by Father Rufino Collantes while the godfather was Father Pedro Casanas. He was named after the Christian Saint “Joseph” or “San Jose”. He was the only member of their family who used their surname Rizal. His full name is Doctor Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal Alonzo y Realonda.
Rizal’s parent’s, Francisco and Theodora, were married on June 28, 1848 then settled on Calamba where they engaged in farming and stock raising business. They reared a big family. They had eleven children, 2 boys and 9 girls. Rizal children were Saturnina, Paciano, Narcisa, Olimpia, Lucia, Maria, Jose, Concepcion, Josefa, Trinidad and Soledad.
Rizal’s family is affluent. Their house was one of the distinguished stone houses in Calamba, a 2-storey building in adobe stone, hard wood and roofed with red tiles. Behind their house were poultry and a big garden. They belonged to the principalia class. Their family managed a general goods store, small flour mill and home-made ham press. They owned a carriage and private library which is the largest in Calamba. Rizal children were also sent to colleges in Manila.
