Uniforms and Public Schools

Do you think that school uniforms should be mandatory in public schools? Many have different opinions on whether this should be obligatory. For some parents this may be better, financially speaking. They wouldn’t have to spend as much money as they do buying their children designer clothing trying to keep up with the trends.

First of all, buying clothes for school can be very expensive when you don’t have a uniform policy at your children’s school. I remember when I attended my first year of high school we didn’t have a uniform policy. You could wear whatever you wanted. The thing was that you were always stressing out on what you were going to wear the following day. You didn’t want to repeat the jeans you had already worn on the previous days. The pressure was always there. It was like you were competing on who had the best designer jeans, or the prettiest and most expensive shoes. This can be very stressful for our parents. I have come to realize this now that I am a parent.

Pursuing this further, some believe that wearing a school uniform create a better learning environment at school. The students don’t get distracted on how they look, and spend more time learning. It is also believed that using a uniform helps students become more disciplined. Wearing a uniform makes students more disciplined because they know what they have to wear and they won’t get in trouble for it. When you don’t wear a uniform you can get in trouble for wearing clothes not fit for school. I remember a lot of my friends being sent to I.S.S (In School Suspension) because they wouldn’t follow the school’s dress code. They wore blouses that showed too much and spent valuable time doing nothing. Punishment for violating the school dress code took away the time you could have used learning. I personally believe that uniforms help improve the behavior of students and that it helps them
