The story seems to has a kind of racial content. The main character is a jew, which is described by the writer having long nose and write like camel, refers to bow legs and flat feet, associated with jews residence, which is usually a place of disease and decay that caused health problem and malnutrition. However, through the story, the reader commonly will accept Oliver Bacon, the jew, as victims that manipulated by The Duchess of Lambourne, since the story is told from Mr. Bacon's point of view.

Here the writer makes Oliver Bacon as the richest jeweller in England. He had every privilege he got from that position, luxurious material that not every one could bought. There describes his upper-floor apartment, his perfect trousers and boots, and people murmurs as he walks along.

With all the affluence he owns now, he would reminisce to the past, talk to the portrait of her mother, chuckle at his young. He tried to cast away his childhood, for climbed the social ladder. He tried to masks—though failed, his jewishness with his now improved physical appearance. Unfortunately he again unsuccessful in doing so, he can't masks his long nose and camel-like walk (which is commonly accepted as jewish stereotypes).

In contrast with Oliver Bacon, The Duchess of Lambourne appearance reflects her noblety. However, aristocratic she is, she is begging money to Oliver Bacon, the jew. It's implied that she has often meet Oliver to sell something. The Duchess loves to gambling, and it seems like she often lost her money there. She even manipulating Oliver to buy her fake pearls, offering inevitable invitation he couldn't resist. She invites Oliver to join her family, along with the Prime Minister, step in the circle he cravings. Plus, the Duchess offer a weekend with Diana, her daughter that he yearns for.
