Mythological and Modern Day Heroes Paper

Mythological heroes have paved the way for modern day heroes and their tales. In most literature that involves a hero, the tale will follow that hero’s journey. In modern day, we have seen similar stories from old myths that are retold, but keep the content similar and keep the myth alive. In the end, mythological and modern day heroes share many characteristics, and their tales can often educate the reader on morals.

Hero Characteristics

Spiderman is a modern day mythological hero. His characteristics include super human strength, the ability to climb walls or grip to different surfaces, and he has an enhanced reaction time known as Spidey sense. Spiderman is the alter ego of a boy named Peter Parker who developed his mythological hero characteristics after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Spiderman can shoot web like material from his wrists which enables him to swing from surfaces in a flying like manner. Spiderman can lift over 100 times his own body weight and hold his own in a duel. Due to his mythological abilities, Spiderman is able to stop crime and save lives even though he struggles to keep his life in order as Peter Parker.

Similarities to Mythological Heroes

A major similarity that Spiderman and other mythological heroes have in common is flaws. Achilles struggled with his anger, as well as his heel. Odysseus talked too much and also had a misguided sense of pride. Spiderman struggled with inexperience and naivety. Peter Parker developed his alter ego of Spiderman at a young age and struggled to handle the enormous pressure which caused him to lose a few lives as opposed to saving them all. At first, Spiderman used his new abilities for selfish reasons only. Once he learned from this, he became more of a hero.
