How Vietnamese Perceives Human Beauty and How It Affects Our Lives?

How mankind perceive human beauty is varied from eras to eras. According to Koeppel, “The Renaissance Era (1400-1700),women whowere extra fat and had wider hips, were considered to be the most beautiful. To the Heroin Chic (1990s), people admire an extremely thin body. Moreover, the body shape tends to be androgynous. Postmodern era (2000s - present),the beauty standard now is about having a thin but healthy body,big breasts, full hip and flat belly“ (Women’s Ideal Body Types Throughout History, 2015).Whatever it is, beauty has always been a goal and dream for everyone. Beauty is art for it takes time to be felt and it also affects people’s emotion. But in this random society, like Vietnam, beauty is viewed narrowly as though preparing instant noodle. This research will help find out how Vietnamese perceives human beauty and how it affects our lives.

Definition of beauty:

According to Oxford Dictionary‘Beauty is the harmonious combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses or intellect of people when they savor and contemplate a thing or fact in particular’.Beauty is not just about the out-looking but also from anything around us like the behavior or belief. Because of the extension of beauty, the assignment will be limited to the category of human beauty.

Perry wrote “A general depiction of a person's beauty, be it individualistic or from a community's point of view, is an result of an vivid combination of the inner beauty, including qualities such as intelligence, personality, elegance and charisma and some other subjective factors, and outer beauty, which some may referred as physical attractiveness or attributes that are judged in everyday life” (Behind the Pretty Woman, n.d)

To the standard of physical beauty around the world, there is a saying ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’. The evaluation of beauty is very various and alterable. The awareness of people about beauty also depends on many supplements such as: age, belief, nation, social status. Thus, there is the difference in conception of each country which lead to distinction in cultures, clothing’s as well as accessories. For example,Vagianos defines ‘People in Colombia, Mexico and Peru consider tiny waists, large breasts and curvy hips reflect the traditional voluptuous beauty standards ’, while ‘Chinese and Italianprefer the body with very thin legs and arms’ (What The ‘Ideal’ Woman’s Body Looks Like In 18 Countries, 2015)

The importance of beauty:

For the animal, the males are inclined to be outstanding so as to attract the females for mating. Believe or not, to some extents, everybody also judges the others based on their appearance.
