While majority of the contemporary seasons revolve around glamour and mystique in the world, The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) stands out in its own league. It satirically targets the two densely populated poles in cultural strata- egg-headed scientific geeks and beauty without brains.

The central cultural contradiction being addressed in this show is the real definition of intelligence. Is the science geek befits the real definition of a true genius, who has a GPA of 4.0 and works at a reputed research institute but deeply lacks any form of social aptitude? Or the girl-next-door is smart, who is pursuing her hopeless dream of climbing in the acting arena? She might not be able to correctly narrate the exact number of galaxies existing but can scrupulously recall the number of handsome young men living in her building. This is one of the most debated topics amongst the adult population as everybody wants to score higher on the IQ scale. As people enjoy participating in this debate, hence, it is one of the major reasons which accounts for the show’s popularity.

Apart from this factor, there are numerous other causes for the high ratings. People, especially students, find it really easy to connect with different characters in the series. During various transitions in our lives especially from adolescence to adulthood, different characters emerge in our own personalities. These characters have their own sets of insecurities. These insecurities are aptly captured by the show’s eccentric individuals present in the show- an obsessive compulsive Sheldon, a perverted Wolowitz, an extremely shy Raaj, a wannabe cool nerd, Leonard and a dumb blonde Penny (who is not so dumb after all). Even though the depiction is highly exaggerated, it makes it more interesting in this manner as it provides an opportunity to laugh at them in a relaxed ambience.

This show is equally fun for both the nerd and dummy cultures. The nerds get to flaunt their complex intellect
