Friendship is to be the severest test of a character. Friendship is a beautiful thing; and it is our bonds with others that enhance our daily routines. People become our acquaintances, friends, or best-friends. What truly makes a great friend? To be a great friend one must be able to listen, support, and be honest with their companion.

A great friend listens. There are times when one doesn’t always want to; but being there for one another is a quality a great friend possesses. For example, when my grandfather passed away my best friend, Chris Jones, sat with me and allowed me to vent my feelings. He didn’t have to say a word but knowing someone would take the time out of their lives to listen to mine made all the difference. There is a time for advice, and one should know when to offer it. Also, as humans, we cannot read each other’s thoughts. So communication is essential. Listen to each other’s point of views even if they don’t coincide. For example, Chris at one point felt I was leaving him out when hanging around other people. I would have never known he felt that way. So I made an effort to change it; and our friendship was better.

Supporting one another is also vital. Supporting doesn’t mean agreeing with their choices, but encouraging them anyways. For example, my friend Matthew didn’t like skateboarding at all but I was very into it. He encouraged my skateboarding by riding with me and understanding the jargon. Attending your friends sporting events or any meaningful event is something that a great friend does. Support ties in the aspect of the unconditional. It should be shown through ones actions that they will always be there for each other for their highest highs and lowest lows.

Too many times have I witnessed a friendship destroyed over deceit and lies. Being truthful, even when it’s something your friend doesn’t want to hear, is the most important quality of a true friend. Once you have proved to be dishonest,
