Workplace Accident Reduction Tips

Workplace accidents are not always simply, well, accidental. There are usually a series of things that have occurred that lead up to the culmination of an accident. Knowing what some of these precursors are and addressing them early on may very well stop an accident that’s waiting to happen.

Being Over Confident

Having confidence is an important trait to have in life but there’s a fine line between having enough and having too much. Unfortunately placing an inordinate amount of confidence in yourself, your co-workers, or machinery can lead to problems. The idea that “it can never happen to me” is usually a thought that leads to trouble. So retain a certain amount of humility that you’re not indestructable or perfect and accidents can happen to you too!

Ignoring The Safety Training And Processes

Nearly every task in the workplace has an outlined process or procedure in relation to safety. There is usually a right way and a wrong way to do something and whether it’s the process engineer or the worker themselves that have figured it out, documenting not only the best process for efficiency but also for safety, should be considered. Once those elements or steps have been laid out, then they should be presented to the employees and enforced to integrate compliance. Be sure as well to note why these steps are involved and what can happen when they are not followed. Having a laid back attitude about safety policies is one of the leading causes of accidents.

Taking Shortcuts

Anyone who has ever worked in a production facility knows that there is pressure to produce. In some ways it seems the numbers are all that matters, and in reality they are important. However with the added pressure to hit a particular number or quota, employees will often do whatever it takes to hit the mark, and in doing so, they may cut corners on safety. And the odds of having an accident usually increase when they do. It’s important in the organization’s culture to integrate production and safety together. One without the other is an incomplete, inefficient, and ineffective operation.
