Throughout the history of filmmaking there have been many advancements and many different movies that can be compared and contrasted. When taking all the film industry had to offer when considering two film to choose to compare and contrast I looked for something more then just a similar plot and aimed to find two film that I believe to have similar underlying meanings. The first film I chose to look and analyze is Island of Lost Souls (Kenton 1932). This film is a great portrayal of early science fiction and creative directing. The second film I chose to analyze, compare and contrast is I Am Legend (Lawrence 2007). This film similar to Island of Lost Souls and is a great portrayal of what a science fiction film has become.

One major factor in all film and film analysis is the theme. Both these movies have a very strong theme, although the overall plot may differ have similar theme and meaning behind them. I believe both of these films take on the political issue of exiling a certain person for their actions, in both cases the person believes they are advancing science for the greater good of mankind. In Island of Lost Souls a mad scientist is shunned out of a country for his unlawful experimentations on animals, attempting to convert them into humans. In I Am Legend a re-engineered virus thought to cure cancer was created and used on humans. The virus killed almost all the population and left one man to try and find a cure. The person who created the virus and was doing the experimenting in both cases was killed by what they had created. In both films the director uses sound as a key element in creating the aura of suspense and gives the directors the ability to really grab your attention when the need be. By implementing this it makes the viewer really pay attention to the small details within the set of the movie, which adds to the creepiness of the overall film.
