Chapter 1

Background of The Study

1.1 Introduction:-

The banking industry in Bangladesh is characterized by strict regulations and monitoring from the central governing body, the Bangladesh Bank. The main concern is that currently there are many banks for the market to sustain. As result the market will only accommodate those banks that can transpire the most competitive & profitable in the future. Currently the major financial institutions under the banking system include:

 Bangladesh Bank

 Private Commercial Banks

 State Owned Commercial Banks

 Islamic Banks

 Non-Bank Financial Institutions; etc.

The International Islamic University Chittagong has designed a well combined course for Bachelor of Business Administration which comprises both theoretical and practical program in the arena of business and non-business financial sector. Since the students of the program were engaged with very much theoretical course work, I have completed my Internship Program for my academic curriculum purposes. The aim of the Internship Program is to blend our academic knowledge with that of practical ones and give us an insight into the management of organization in real life situations. As a part of practical orientation program, I was attached to Southeast Bank, Jubilee Road Branch for three months. On completion of the practical orientation program it supported me to prepare and submit a report of such program. The report is comprise of the organizational overview, operation of Banking in the different section such as General Banking, Loans & Advances, Foreign Trade/Exchange and Briefly analysis the performance of the Branch. Finally the report has been concluded with some recommendations. It is expected that the report will highlight the task performed and experienced gained during the practical orientation program.

1.2 Objectives of the Study:-

Primary goal of the study is to have knowledge about the credit policy and recovery system of Southeast Bank Limited (SEBL)

Basically my objectives behind the report are:

 To know the credit policy, credit operation model, credit appraisal and analysis process.

 To know the procedure of sanctioning loan.

 To identify about different types of loans & advances.

 To know the process of selecting borrowers

 To know about the loan recovery system.
