As Peter Vyas, how would you handle the expenditure request for the re-launch of the mini water oxidation system?

As Peter Vyas, instead of looking at the request as a major challenge or obstacle, I would view this as an opportunity to alter how others view my department. This is an opportunity to show Ms. Jackson the progress we have made. The cost of two million dollars is nothing to ignore and my Filtration Unit’s track record of failure during the product’s development has hurt my credibility. This is something I need to seriously consider before rushing in to make a presentation. If I were to support the proposal, I would further risk my own credibility, as well as that of my entire unit. That being said, support for development and innovation is something very important to this company. Finally, I must remember that my boss, Ms. Jackson, has the right to final approval of the product.

What I can do is present her with the best information so that she may make the most informed decision possible. I should stress all of the improvements that my team has been able to make to the mini-oxidation system. It is also crucial to remember that ART is dedicated to supporting innovation, not only with it’s funding, but also its practices. Employees are given time each week to experiment, brainstorm, and think outside of the box. This was a practice that the company’s founder and current CEO, David Hall, referred to as “tinker-time”. The focus is on having managers create, promote, and back promising ideas. There is no shame in failure according to Hall. At ART, they celebrate worthy attempts, even when they are unsuccessful. With this in mind, I will present my work to Ms. Jackson, and in doing so, I will show that all of her steps were followed diligently. In this way, I hope to demonstrate that the work I have done represents the best possible course of action. I hope that, with this in mind, she will feel compelled to say yes to the product re-launch. I know I am facing a critical decision, but I am confident that the project is going in the right direction and that it is necessary to go forward for the survival of the division and to recover full trust.

In conclusion, As Vyas, I would  express confidence in the project, highlighting the fact that I have gone through all the proper due diligence. Secondly, I would acknowledge that it is ultimately Ms. Jackson’s decision, and present her with all relevant information, including that which is not necessarily favorable to me. In this way, I will be able to demonstrate that I have adapted my approach to suit her style, and further, that I am credible, but also dedicated to innovation and development.

As Cynthia Jackson, would you approve the expenditure request if Vyas sends it up to you? WHy or why not?

As Cynthia Jackson, there would be several elements I would consider before approving the expenditure request. Firstly, even though I am the newly appointed vice president of ART’s Water Management Division, I am acutely aware of the mounting losses in the Filtration Unit, and have already devoted a significant amount of time trying to get them back on track. I’m trying to support and protect them, but they must learn to become more disciplined.
