Bases of Power Inventory

According to the text, Power is the “capacity to produce effects on others or the potential to influence others” (Hughes, 2012). The text refers to expert power, referent power, legitimate power, reward power, and coercive power. The author of this paper took the bases of power inventory questionnaire and it took about five minutes to complete. The author calculated her scores and will discuss the results in this paper. The base of power inventory is attached with the paper.

Expert Power

According to Hughes (2012), “expert power is the power of knowledge”. The student scored fourteen points. According to the results, the author can exert influence based on what you know and experience. The author has been with State Farm Insurance for over 11 years in Auto claims. This author is influential among her co-workers because she is recognized for her quality of work and customer service. The author is recognized as a dedicated worker. When there is a new person coming in to the unit, the author is influencing the new employee with her years of experience and influences the new employee the knowledge they need to perform their job.

Referent Power

“Referent power refers to the potential influence one has due to strength of the relationship between the leader and the followers” (Hughes, 2012).

The score for referent power was twelve. According to the results, the author can exert influence based who you know. During the author’s time in the U.S. Army, the author was at the rank of a sergeant. There were four soldiers assigned to the author’s unit. Sometimes the soldiers had to pull twenty four hours duty. The author would go to Tim Horton’s restaurant and pick up coffee and donuts. She would take them to her soldiers at night and visit with them to make sure that they were okay and if they needed anything. No other non-commission officers did that for their soldiers.

Legitimate Power

“Legitimate power depends on a person’s organizational role” (Hughes, 2012). Legitimate power allows a person to make decisions and take action relatively quickly (Curphy, 2009). The student scored a seven. According to the inventory results, this author has limited ability to influence
