Within the correctional facilities there are many challenging factors in which these factors causes major issues for the correctional staff within prisons/jails. There are also some moments when the can be some satisfactions within the role of a correctional officer. The role of a correctional officers requires many different roles within includes coming in contact with all inmates. The main functions of a correctional officer require the officer to maintain the security and the control over all inmates, officers will usually work unarmed because within the jails/prisons the correctional officers are only are exposed to cellblock activity. According to (The Education Portal, 2003) “correctional officers are equipped with a communication devices, in which is used for the need of more help from other officers.” On a typical work day for correctional officers there are some issues that will interfere with the correctional officer on a day to day basis. Within this paper it will explain the major issues and satisfaction that occurs within the prisons/jails.

Within the criminal justice system being in the field of corrections can be the most stressful job, because there are many inmates that are being held within the prison/jail in which these individuals have commit many different crimes. According to Nolan, 2011 there have been different studies that have shown that the work environment has a major affect on all correctional staff, which includes negative outcomes such as death, different health problems, social problems, and then there will be a decrease within the job performance, which becomes a major issue for the rest of the staff within the facility.

In the correctional field there is currently a high demand for correctional officer’s reasons behind the lack of workers is because there are many turnovers within the facility, which stems from the issues on overcrowding. According to (Hobbs, N.d) “since there are an increase number of prisoners in all state and federal facilities overcrowding has now become the main factor. The negative impact that the staff has to face is not having the proper amount of workers to work each shift within the correctional system. These issues are in the form of a domino effect. First comes the overcrowding issue, which is followed by there not being enough workers to provide and give the inmates the time and attention needed because of the shortage of workers, which then turns into the current workers pulling extra hours and performing extra work duties, Which brings on another issue since the government has gone over their budget there is now a possibility that the correctional workers will not get paid for any extra time or work that is performed within the correctional facility.

Finally the last issue that has present itself within correctional staff is that there are many correctional officers
