Attached is a report on the testing of the soil density at the proposed site of the new facility for Viking Tool Co. The report and tests were provided by a contracted civil engineering firm. The firm completed its testing on October 12. The soil density was tested to find whether the new building site is adequate, whether the site should be modified, or if a different site should be selected. The new facility will employ machinery that creates vibratory loads, so soil density must be tested specifically for this purpose.

To test the soil, a civil engineering firm was contracted. Two American Society of Testing and Materials methods were used: the sand cone method (ASTM D1556) and the drive sampler method (ASTM 2937). Three layers of soil at the building site were observed using these methods.

The testing has shown that a portion of the soil is adequate for a plant that contains machinery with vibratory loads. The soil density tests showed three layers of soil: a 15 in. layer of loose loam, relative density of 53%, dry density of 47 lb/cubic foot; a 12 in. layer of loam and clay, relative density of 43%, dry density of 52 lb/cubic foot; a layer of fine sand, relative density of 97%, dry density of 110 lb/ cubic foot. Relative density of 72% is defined as adequate for supporting vibratory loads.

On the basis of these finding I suggest that Viking Tool Co. modify the soil at the proposed building site to achieve a desired soil density. Because portions of the soil are adequate for the building site, it would be best to modify the current site as opposed to finding a new location.
