Chinese Cinderella Literary Response Essay

Authors use numerous techniques and strategies to develop the characters, plot, and ultimately the theme of the novel. In Chinese Cinderella, Adeline uses several literary techniques to develop the characters, plot and the theme. The theme that I thought of this book is Perseverance and among all of the literary techniques that is being used by Adeline in Chinese Cinderella, the three that stands out to me that helps develop this theme would be metaphor, alliteration and rhetorical question.

Firstly, a metaphor is a figure of speech that contained an implied comparison. It is to literary compare two things that may have some or none things in common. The theme of this book is perseverance and throughout the book, metaphor is being used to help develop this theme. A quote from the book would be the following…

“My whole being vibrated with all the joy in the world. I only had to stretch out my hand to reach the stars” (Pg. 192)

Adeline just found out that she has just won first prize the in international play-writing competition and is on cloud nine. In this quote, you could see that Adeline has persevered in her life and at the end, she gave all she got in this competition and has won first prize.

Secondly, alliteration is being used throughout the book as well. Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter of connected words. Alliteration was used in this book to help enhance a certain point that Adeline is trying to make at certain points in the book. A quote from the book would be the following…

“ “Don’t you know anything? ” the chauffeur replied rudely. “This is your new home. Your parents moved here a few months ago.” ” (Pg. 190)
