What does the term ‘demographic’ mean?

The term demographic means the characteristics of the population. This includes factors such as race, sex, age, household size and population growth. Demographics are current statistical figures about the population. Demographic figures help organisations to construct a marketing plan based on the research they’ve found as it helps to personalise their campaigns increasing individual’s interest.

Health needs:

One demographic influence which has influenced the organisation and provision of services is health needs. The cervical cancer jab was introduced after a high number of women began being diagnosed with cervical cancer so the government introduced this jab aimed at 14 year olds to prevent the disease affecting more of the population. In 2009 3,378 women died of cervical cancer but this figure dramatically dropped after introducing the cervical cancer jab, in 2010, 936 women died of cervical cancer. In 2009 worries about children becoming increasingly obese came to the government’s attention and so they introduced the anti-obesity campaign to decrease the health risks associated with obesity such as coronary heart disease. The NHS concluded in 2009 that at least a third of all children in the UK were classed as being overweight before they started primary school.

The number of older people in the population:

Another demographic influence is the number of older people in the population in 2008 it was found by the UK National Office of Statistics that the UK has more people of pensionable age than those under the age of 16. It has been concluded that this is because of the constantly advancing medical facilities that are now on offer.
