Writing a Short Comparison Paper

You are to write a brief (3-5 page) essay comparing how the relationship of love and power is portrayed in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and David Ives’s Venus in Fur.

I would suggest taking one of the following three ideas as a focus for your essay:

  • how power affects concepts of femininity and masculinity in relationships;
  • the role of physical power within love relationships;
  • how imagination/play-acting/pretending is a way of expressing power within love relationships.

Your thesis should be a claim about how similar or different Shakespeare’s and Ives’s depictions of love and power are.

First paragraph: Discuss your own observations and experiences relevant to the issue and the focus you have selected. State your personal opinion about how power issues often affect loving relationships.

Second paragraph: Briefly introduce and summarize Shakespeare’s and Ives’s portrayals (include each author’s full name and the full title of the play, in italics). Conclude by stating your thesis in a complete sentence.

Third paragraph: Discuss at least two of the obvious differences between Shakespeare’s and Ives’s portrayals of a relationship. Rather than quote examples, summarize them in your own words. Use parenthetical references at the end of sentences that cite these examples; for instance:

                It is on the road back to Padua that Petruchio finally gets Kate to

                play along with him by pretending that old Vincentio is actually a

                pretty young girl (IV.v.27-48).

Fourth, Fifth, & Sixth paragraphs: Depending on your thesis, discuss at least two ways in which you believe that either there are less obvious similarities between the portrayals or that there are less obvious differences. You may use some quotation here, but only if specific wording is important for demonstrating your claims. Reference quotations in the same way as above:
