Adams-Onis Treaty

The two major disputes in the Adams-Onis Treaty were the dispute over the Southern boundary with Spanish Florida and over the Seminole Indians who helped runaway slaves and raided U.S. settlements. Each country compromised in the treaty. Spain gave East Florida to the United States. The U.S. paid five million dollars of claims against Spain and gave up all of their claims to modern-day Texas. The Adams-Onis Treaty did improve the relationship between the United States and Spain and created peace for a period of time.

Missouri Compromise

The problem started when Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state. By doing this, it would upset balance of 11 free states and 11 slave states. This issue is known as sectionalism- disagreements between the different regions. The House of Representatives passed a special amendment declaring the U.S. would accept Missouri as a slave state, but importing enslaved Africans into Missouri would be illegal. This amendment also set free the children of Missouri slaves. The south became angry and rejected Missouri as a state. With the north and the south disagreeing about this it became an example of sectionalism. Eventually this conflict was solved with the Missouri Compromise. This compromise had three main conditions- Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state, Maine would join the Union as a free state, and slavery would be prohibited above the 36°30' latitude-Missouri's southern border. Although the compromise was a success, there were still strong disagreements between the North and the South over the expansion of slavery.
